JILL KING STUDIO {Mixed Media Sculpture, Public Art}
BIO/STATEMENT
King earned a BFA from Northern Illinois University and an MA from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Her work has been commissioned and exhibited in notable public venues, including the Javits Convention Center, the Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art, The Mills House Hotel, and innovative spaces like the Meta Data Center. She has also taught at The American Academy of Art, The Evanston Art Center, and Oakton Community College, in Chicagoland.
ARTIST'S STATEMENT:
My artistic practice merges drawing, welding, sewing, and painting—methods traditionally associated with both feminine and masculine labor—into sculptural forms that are simultaneously delicate and durable. I construct welded steel armatures by “drawing in space” with rods, twisting and shaping them until a form emerges that resonates with energy and intention. Onto these skeletal forms, I stretch hand-selected, fire-retardant fabrics to create dynamic, semi-transparent surfaces that respond to light, space, and motion.
Inspired by natural phenomena such as cosmic nebulae and swirling hurricanes, my sculptures often evoke the invisible forces that shape our world—and ourselves. Many appear to float or pulse with movement, inviting a sense of awe and reflection.
Public art has become an essential extension of my studio practice. I’m drawn to the way art in public spaces can surprise and engage people in their daily routines, creating moments of curiosity, beauty, and connection. I thrive when designing site-specific works that respond to the architecture, history, or spirit of a community. For me, public art is an opportunity to speak in a visual language that transcends barriers and invites open interpretation, often allowing a viewer to pause, question, or feel seen.
