BIO
Jill King transforms steel and fabric into sculptural bursts of energy. Drawing inspiration from cosmic and natural forces, her work captures movement, light, and the unseen dynamics that shape our world.
King earned a BFA from Northern Illinois University and an MA from the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee. Her work has been commissioned and exhibited in notable public venues including the Javits Convention Centerin NY, the Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art in Chicago, The Mills House Hotel SC, and innovative spaces such as Level99 and the Meta Data Center. She has also taught at The American Academy of Art, The Evanston Art Center, and Oakton Community College in the Chicago area.
Her artistic practice merges drawing, welding, sewing, and painting—methods historically associated with both feminine and masculine labor—into sculptural forms that are both delicate and resilient. She constructs welded steel armatures by “drawing in space” with metal rods, then stretches hand-selected fabrics across the forms, often chosen for their patterns and cultural or historical associations.
Inspired by cosmic nebulae and swirling hurricanes, her sculptures evoke invisible forces moving through nature, space, and the human psyche, often appearing to float or pulse with energy. Public art is a natural extension of her practice, creating moments of curiosity, beauty, and connection within shared spaces.
