BIO/STATEMENT

King earned a BFA from Northern Illinois University and an MA from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Her work has been commissioned and exhibited in notable public venues, including the Javits Convention Center, the Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art, The Mills House Hotel, and innovative spaces like the Meta Data Center. She has also taught at The American Academy of Art, The Evanston Art Center, and Oakton Community College, in Chicagoland.

King’s sculptures explore themes of loss and discovery, darkness and light, constraint and vulnerability. She draws inspiration from forces of nature—topographical images of hurricanes and the breathtaking vastness of the cosmos. Capturing emotional states and the energy of the present moment, she uses that impetus to drive her creative process. She begins many of her works by gesturally drawing with wire or steel rods—twisting, melting, and manipulating the material until the armature takes form. Her three-dimensional artworks emerge as she stretches opaque fabric over linear steel constructions, resulting in airy sculptures that evoke floating celestial clouds or ethereal subconscious figures. By incorporating welded steel, sewn fireproof fabrics, and hand-painted touches, King creates innovative, durable sculptures that engage and transform space. These elements serve as powerful vehicles for expression in her suspended and wall-mounted public artworks.
